After that, you move freely across member states. Most travelers need only a passport, though specifics hinge on your nationality and trip length. Check requirements a few weeks out. Visa Requirements

Latvia follows Schengen visa rules. Your nationality dictates whether you need a visa and how long you can stay. The official Latvian immigration website carries the final word. Consult it before booking anything.

Visa-Free Entry
Usually up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

Many nationalities enter Latvia and the Schengen Area for short stays without advance visas.

This 90-day limit covers your entire Schengen stay, not Latvia alone. Carry proof of funds, onward travel, and visit purpose. A European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) will eventually apply to visa-exempt travelers. It is not active. Wait for the EU announcement before applying.

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA/eVisa)
Not applicable currently.

Latvia currently lacks a separate electronic authorization for tourist visits. ETIAS, once live, becomes the standard pre-travel step for visa-exempt visitors.

How to Apply: For ETIAS, apply through the official EU website once operational. Most approvals should come fast.
Cost: The expected fee is a small amount, around a few euros.

Skip third-party sites claiming to process ETIAS now. The system is not live. No applications are being accepted.

Visa Required
The visa will specify the allowed duration and validity period.

Travelers from non-visa-exempt countries need Schengen visas before arrival.

How to Apply: Apply at a Latvian embassy, consulate, or authorized visa center in your home country. Travel insurance is required here. The official rule is set out below.

Arrival Process

Riga entry moves fast. Follow 'Arrivals' and 'Passport Control' (Ieeja) signs after disembarking. Keep passport and documents in hand.

Officers may request proof of sufficient funds (bank statements or cash), return or onward tickets, and Riga accommodation confirmation.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Keep all documents, passport, insurance, hotel booking, flight itinerary, in your carry-on. Never in checked bags.
Non-EU arrivals should expect EES biometric processing, fingerprints and photo, at the border. This is standard procedure.
Proof of funds requests are rare. Carry cash or a bank statement anyway. This prevents delays if asked.
Answer immigration questions politely and directly. Avoid over-explaining or jokes. These can trigger extra scrutiny.

Customs & Duty-Free

After passport control and baggage collection, choose the green 'Nothing to Declare' or red 'Goods to Declare' customs channel. Latvia follows standard EU customs rules.

Alcohol
1 liter of spirits above 22% volume, OR 2 liters of fortified wine or similar beverages below 22%, OR a proportional combination. Also, 4 liters of still wine and 16 liters of beer.
You must be 18 or older to bring in alcohol.
Tobacco
200 cigarettes, OR 100 cigarillos, OR 50 cigars, OR 250g of smoking tobacco.

Currency
10,000 euros (or equivalent in other currencies).
Declare cash amounts of 10,000 euros or more. This rule covers currency, traveler's checks, and any monetary instruments. Customs needs to know. No exceptions.
Gifts/Goods
Personal goods get duty-free treatment up to 430 euros by air or sea. Arrive by land and the limit drops to 300 euros. Know your route.
This covers everything outside alcohol and tobacco. Exceed the limit and you declare. VAT and duty may apply. Be ready to pay.

Prohibited Items

  • Counterfeit goods and pirated copies - illegal under EU law
  • Illegal narcotics and drugs - strictly prohibited
  • Switchblades and knuckledusters count as dangerous weapons. Leave them home. Authorization is rarely granted to casual travelers.
  • Ivory and tortoiseshell need CITES permits. Protected species rules are strict. Paperwork matters. Confiscation is common for violations.

Restricted Items

  • Pack your prescriptions. Carry documentation for controlled substances or large quantities. Border officials can ask. Be prepared.
  • Firearms and ammunition - require prior authorization and permits
  • Plants, fruits, and vegetables face phytosanitary checks. Non-EU sources get extra scrutiny. Declare everything. Fines are steep.

Non-EU visitors need health insurance covering their entire stay. The policy must include medical treatment and repatriation costs. EU citizens carry an EHIC or UK GHIC. Everyone benefits from complete travel insurance. Medical coverage is non-negotiable.
